METAL GRINDING WHEEL FAQ's
What is a Metal Grinding Wheel?

A metal grinding wheel is a type of abrasive wheel that can grind or remove metal and other hard materials using a sideways motion. Metal grinding wheels are made by bonding abrasive grains, such as aluminum oxide or zirconia alumina, together with resin. Metal grinding wheels are thick enough to withstand high pressures and temperatures and rigid enough to maintain their shape and size.

Metal grinding wheels can be fitted to various power tools, such as angle grinders, bench grinders, die grinders, etc., depending on the size and shape of the wheel and the material being ground. Metal grinding wheels come in different diameters, thicknesses, and types, depending on the type of material and grind you want to achieve.

Types of Metal Grinding Wheel

  • Type 27 wheels, which have a depressed center and are used for grinding on flat surfaces.
  • Type 28 wheels, which have a saucer-shaped center and are used for grinding on curved surfaces.
  • Type 29 wheels, which have a conical-shaped center and are used for grinding on angled surfaces.
  • Type 1 wheels, also known as type 41 wheels, have a flat shape and are used for cutting off metal with a grinder.
  • Type 42 wheels, which have a depressed center with a reinforced center and are used for cutting off metal with a grinder.Type 42 wheels, which have a depressed center with a reinforced center and are used for cutting off metal with a grinder.
How to extend the life of the Metal Grinding Wheel?

  • Use the right wheel for the right material. Different types of metal grinding wheels are designed for different types of materials, such as steel, stainless steel, aluminum, etc. Using the wrong wheel for the wrong material can cause the wheel to wear out faster or damage the material.
  • Use proper lubrication when grinding metal. Lubrication helps to reduce friction and heat, which can cause the wheel to glaze over or lose its sharpness. Lubrication also improves the quality of the grind and the life of the wheel.
  • Dress the wheel regularly. Dressing the wheel means removing the glazed or dull layer of abrasive grains on the edge of the wheel and exposing a fresh layer of sharp grains. This can be done by grinding into a hard material, such as a dressing stick or a grinding wheel, for a few seconds. Dressing the wheel can restore its grinding performance and extend its life.
  • Clean the wheel properly after each use. You should clean the wheel with a soft brush and a gentle solvent to remove any dirt or debris that may have accumulated on the wheel. This can prevent corrosion and rust, which can affect the quality and life of the wheel.
