MASONRY SLICKER FAQ's
What is a Masonry Slicker?

A masonry slicker is a tool that is used to smooth out the surface of wet concrete. It is a long, thin tool that has a handle on one end and a metal blade on the other. The blade is usually made of stainless steel or another type of metal that is resistant to rust. A masonry slicker is used to create a smooth and level finish on wet concrete after it is poured and screeded. It can also be used to remove any excess concrete or air bubbles from the surface.

What are the different types of Masonry Slickers?

types are:

  • Flat slicker: A masonry slicker that has a flat blade with two different widths on each side. For example, a flat slicker with a 3/8" x 1/2" blade can be used to smooth out joints of different sizes.
  • Single slicker: A masonry slicker that has a flat blade with the same width on both sides. For example, a single slicker with a 3/8" blade can be used to smooth out joints of the same size.
  • Half-round slicker: A masonry slicker that has a curved blade that can create a concave joint. For example, a half-round slicker with a 1/2" radius can be used to create a rounded joint.
  • Double slicker: A masonry slicker that has two blades on opposite sides of the handle. For example, a double slicker with a 3/8" x 1/2" and a 1/2" x 5/8" blade can be used to smooth out joints of different sizes without changing tools.
How to use Masonry Slicker?

  • Wait until the mortar is slightly set but still soft enough to be shaped. This is usually after 30 minutes to an hour of laying the bricks or stones1.
  • Choose a masonry slicker that matches the size and shape of the joint you want to create. For example, a flat slicker for a flat joint, a half-round slicker for a concave joint, etc.
  • Hold the masonry slicker at an angle and push it across the joint, applying even pressure. This will smooth out the surface of the mortar and remove any excess.
  • Repeat the process for all the joints until you achieve a uniform and neat appearance.
  • Clean the masonry slicker with water and a brush after each use to prevent mortar buildup.
