KEY MACHINES FAQ's
What are Key Machines?

Key machines are devices that are used to make or duplicate keys. They can be manual, semi-automatic, or automatic, depending on the level of automation and speed they offer. Key machines can cut different types of keys, such as basic keys, transponder keys, laser-cut keys, tubular keys, and switchblade keys. Some key machines can also program or clone keys for vehicles that require chipped keys. Key machines are used by locksmiths, car dealerships, hardware stores, and other businesses that provide key services.

How does a key machine work?

Key-cutting machines operate on the 'copy' concept. While you trace the teeth of one key with the key-cutting machine, a separate section of the machine grinds the duplicate teeth into the blank key that is being made.

What are the types of Key Machines?

  • Duplicating key machines for edge-style keys: These machines can copy an existing key by tracing its shape and cutting a blank key accordingly. They are usually used for standard house or office keys that have a flat edge with grooves.
  • Originating key machines for edge style keys: These machines can cut a blank key to a certain code or bitting without an existing key. They are usually used for creating master keys or replacing lost keys1. There are three subtypes of originating key machines: manual, automatic, and punch.
  • High-security key-cutting machines: These machines can cut keys that have complex shapes, angles, or dimples that provide extra security and resistance to picking. They are usually used for car keys, padlocks, or high-end locks.
  • Tubular, cylindrical, and mortice key cutting machines: These machines can cut keys that have round or oval shapes with pins or wards that fit into corresponding holes or slots in the lock. They are usually used for vending machines, bike locks, or furniture locks.
